WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore Martina Pavelec has received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player to Watch Award for the Carolina Region.
The award goes to a player from North Carolina or South Carolina who has had an outstanding season and is expected to perform at a high level for the rest of her career. The award's criteria also include a player's sportsmanship and character.
Pavelec has compiled an overall singles record of 15-9 and has held down the top spot in the Wake lineup since beginning dual match play in late March. She has scored impressive victories over top players such as No. 21 Sanaz Marand (North Carolina) and is expected to continue to be a leader in the Deacon lineup next season.
The Stuttgart, Germany native was selected to the 2010 All-ACC Team and is currently ranked No. 42 in the nation in singles. She will compete in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championships starting May 26 in Athens, Ga.
