WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Three Wake Forest volleyball players received their diplomas on Monday in a commencement ceremony held at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The class of 2010 - Abby Miller, Kate Rodriguez and Sally Fischer - finished their careers with a total of 52 victories and helped lead the team to a school-record 14-3 home record in 2008.
Miller, who is from nearby Lexington, NC, received her sociology degree on Monday. She was a fixture in the back row for the Deacons, playing in all but nine matches over the last four years. This past season, Miller averaged a career-best 3.18 digs per set and recorded a career-high 15 service aces. Against Maryland on Oct. 30, she became just the seventh Demon Deacon to record 1,000 career digs and is currently fifth in school-history with a total of 1,088 digs. Miller will begin work on her master's degree at East Carolina University this fall.
Rodriguez earned her degree in elementary education. The Glen Ellyn, Ill., native worked extremely hard and played through injuries the last couple of seasons, seeing action in a total of 37 matches. She notched a total of 72 career kills to go along with 115 digs. One of her top performances came in 2008 at NC State when she had a career-best six kills, 11 digs and four service aces, including a key ace late in the match-winning fourth-set. Rodriguez is moving back to the Chicago, Ill., area and plans to find a job where she can teach and help children grow.
Fischer was one of the Deacons' go-to players off the bench over the last two seasons. The Indianapolis, Ind., native earned her business degree on Monday and is on her way to New Orleans, La., to teach in the Teach for America Program. She was one of the team's best servers, recording a total of 26 aces in 66 career matches. Fischer also worked hard defensively, averaging nearly one and a half digs per set over the past two years and recorded a total of 160 career digs.
