WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest redshirt senior relief pitcher Joel Ernst has signed a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Reds, it was recently announced.
Ernst, a native of Cincinnati suburb Loveland, Ohio, becomes the second Demon Deacon senior to sign a free agent deal with a MLB team. Earlier this summer, catcher Mike Murray signed with the San Francisco Giants.
Ernst was the most reliable pitcher out of the Demon Deacon bullpen in 2010, appearing in 27 games and finishing the season with a 2-1 record, two saves and a team-best 3.73 ERA. Ernst, who finished tied for fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in appearances, had a string of nine consecutive appearances without allowing a run during his senior campaign.
Over his four seasons at Wake Forest, Ernst pitched in 70 games, including eight starts, and had a 5-4 record with two saves and an 8.18 ERA.
