CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte used a pair of first half goals to defeat No. 14 Wake Forest 2-0 on Tuesday night at Transamerica Field.

Wake Forest falls to 1-2-1 on the season, while Charlotte is now 3-2-0.

Charlotte scored both of its goals in the opening half. The first came in the 33rd minute on a Wake Forest own goal. The 49ers doubled their lead in the 42nd minute on a goal from Evan James.

Ben Newnam and Johnny Torres led Wake Forest with three shots apiece in the contest. Torres, who made his collegiate debut, had two shots on frame. Andy Lubahn added two shots, including one on goal.

Along with the goal by James, Donnie Smith and Tyler Gibson found the scoresheet for the 49ers, with each player registering an assist.

Akira Fitzgerald allowed two goals and made three saves in net for the Demon Deacons, while Charlotte goalkeeper Patrick Eavenson made five saves to earn the clean sheet.

Wake Forest and Charlotte each attempted 12 shots in the match, with the Demon Deacons holding a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Wake had three corner kicks, compared to one for the 49ers.

Wake Forest had its first chance of the match in the ninth minute. Lubahn's shot from the top of the 18-yard box sailed high of the goal.

The Demon Deacons had another good opportunity in the 21st minute. Sam Redmond attempted a shot from the center of the field that required a diving stop by the Charlotte goalkeeper to keep the game scoreless.

Charlotte struck first with a goal in the 33rd minute. A cross from the right side of the field was mishandled by the Demon Deacon backline and went over the goal line for an own goal to put the 49ers up 1-0.

The 49ers made it 2-0 with a goal in the 42nd minute by James. Smith played a cross from the left side of the field. James was able to get a touch on the ball from in front of the goal and got it past Fitzgerald for the second Charlotte goal of the night. Gibson was also credited with an assist on the play.

Wake Forest had a good chance early in the second half on a free kick from just outside the penalty area. Newnam's kick into the box was headed wide by Kyle Adams.

The Deacs continued to get good scoring opportunities early in the second half as Torres had a shot in the 56th minute that was saved by Eavenson.

Charlotte had a scoring opportunity in the 78th minute on a shot from Owen Darby inside the penalty area that went wide right of the goal.

Wake Forest was able to get a pair of shots off in the final 10 minutes as Emerson and Torres each had a shot on goal that was saved by the 49er goalkeeper.

Wake Forest resumes Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday when the Deacs travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face the second-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
