Last week, the Wake Forest women's basketball team had a little fun with its preseason workouts, holding a "Deac"-athlon.
The two-day competition featured events in the weight room, on the track and two special events. The team was divided into two groups - a Gold and a Black team - and a group winner as well as an individual winner was named at the end of the 10 events.
The Gold Team of Chelsea Douglas, Jaymee Carnes, Camille Collier, Lindsy Wright, Mykala Walker, Secily Ray and Lakevia Boykin won the event after a furious comeback. The Black squad held a 27 point lead after the first four events but a strong second day push from the Gold was enough to erase the deficit and provide the final margin of 18 points.
Individually, point guard Brooke Thomas was the overall winner. She won the pull up event with 12 pull ups and had the best standing vertical jump of 27.5 inches. She also took second in the bench press, mile run and the 100-yard dash.
The first day consisted of four events in the weight room - lat pulls, bench press, vertical jump and pull ups. Day two started out with four events on the track and then finished with a tug-o-war and a relay race. In the relay race, the teams had to alternate between pushing a blocking sled 20 yards and flipping a large tire.
Preseason workouts continue through the month leading up to the first practice of the season on Oct. 4.
