WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest's women's basketball 30-game regular season schedule was announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference office on Wednesday afternoon. The Demon Deacons will begin the season on Nov. 14, as they host North Carolina Central at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Wake Forest will play a total of 17 games at the Joel Coliseum this season. The Deacs will also travel to Big East power Notre Dame for a holiday tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Under seventh-year head coach Mike Petersen, the Demon Deacons will face 16 teams that played postseason basketball in 2009-10, including 10 that made the NCAA Tournament.
Wake Forest is scheduled to play six regular season games on television this season and will host three of those contests. The first will come in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Michigan when the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The next five games will all be ACC contests on the Regional Sports Network, which consists of Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports Net South, Fox Sports Net Florida, and New England Sports Network.
The Deacons will open the season with three games at the Joel Coliseum. Wake plays North Carolina Central on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2:00 pm in the first game of the year. The Deacons are 5-1 all-time against the Eagles including a 76-63 victory last season.
Wake will then host South Carolina State on Nov. 18, and William & Mary on Nov. 21. The Deacs have won both meetings with SC State but the two teams have not met since 1991. Wake also holds a perfect 4-0 record against The Tribe with the last contest coming during the 1986-87 campaign.
The Deacons will hit the road for Thanksgiving weekend as they travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Tournament. Wake will open the tournament against Butler on Nov. 26, and then will face host Notre Dame on Nov. 27. IUPUI will be the Deacons' opponent on Nov. 28, as they wrap-up the event.
Butler finished runner-up in last season's Horizon League Tournament and made an appearance in the WNIT. Wake Forest and Butler have played one time previously with Wake winning 74-65 on Dec. 3, 1993.
Notre Dame was a 2-seed last year in the NCAA Tournament and advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 before falling to Oklahoma in overtime. This will be the first ever meeting between the Deacs and the Irish.
After returning home, Wake will turn right back around and head north to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Dec. 1, to face Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Wake is 1-1 in its previous two appearances in the challenge while the Wolverines are the Big Ten's only undefeated team in the challenge at a perfect 3-0.
The Deacons will then come home to face Georgetown on Saturday, Dec. 4. Wake won the first meeting between the two teams in 1995 but the Hoyas have won each of the last two season.
After taking a week off for final exams, Wake will head to the Sunshine State for a pair of games. The Deacons look to make it two-straight over South Florida as they hookup with the Bulls on Dec. 14. Wake then travels north to Jacksonville to face the Dolphins on Dec. 17. Wake downed Jacksonville 64-47 in Winston-Salem last season.
The Deacons will then return home for their longest home stand of the year. Wake plays the next six contests at the Joel Coliseum starting with a 7:00 pm tip against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 20. The Deacs won the only other contest with UMES in 1987.
Two days later, Wake welcomes Southern Conference foe-Furman town on Dec. 22. The two teams have not met since 1999 when the Paladins pulled out a 68-51 victory in Greenville, SC.
Wake will stay in the Southern Conference after a week off for Christmas when it hosts Appalachian State on Dec. 29. This will be the 24th all-time meeting with the Mountaineers. The Deacs have held the upper hand as of late, winning 12 of the last 14 games in the series.
To close out 2010, the Deacons will play host to Princeton on New Year's Eve. The Tigers won the Ivy League title last season, made the NCAA Championship and finished the year with a 26-3 record. Wake holds a 6-1 edge in the all-time series but the teams have not met since 2003.
The Deacons then close out the home stand with games against SMU on Jan. 3, and Hampton on Jan. 6. Wake is 1-1 against SMU with the last meeting coming in 2002 and is a perfect 2-0 against Hampton, sweeping a home-and-home series with the Pirates in 2003 and 2004.
The ACC-slate opens on the road in Raleigh, NC, as the Deacon play NC State on Jan. 10. The game will be televised on RSN. The two teams split the season-series last year with each team winning on its home court.
Wake will be right back in the Joel Coliseum for its next two ACC games as it host Virginia Tech on Jan. 13 and Georgia Tech on Jan. 17. The game with the Yellow Jackets will also be televised by RSN.
Following a trip to Chapel Hill, NC, on Jan 20, to face North Carolina, the Deacons return home to host Clemson on Jan. 23. The next two games will then be televised by RSN as Wake travels to Maryland on Friday, Jan. 28, for an 8:30 pm tip against the Terrapins and then close out the month of January at home against Boston College on Jan. 31.
February starts with a trip to Virginia to face both Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Deacs play Virginia on Feb. 3, before traveling to Blacksburg for a matchup with Virginia Tech on Feb. 6.
Defending ACC champion Duke will come to Winston-Salem, NC, on Friday, Feb. 11. The game is scheduled to start at 8:30 pm and will be shown on RSN. The Deacs will remain at home to face another NCAA Tournament team in Florida State on Feb. 17.
The final road trip of the season begins with a trip to Coral Gables, Fla., to face Miami on Feb. 21. Three days later, Wake travels to Clemson, SC, for a matchup with the Tigers. The Deacs will be looking to buck a trend at Clemson as they have won just twice at Little John Coliseum since 1992.
The final regular season game will be a showdown with NC State at the Joel Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 27.
The 34th Annual ACC Tournament will once again be played at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC, from March 3-6. The Deacons have won an opening round game in the ACC Tournament each of the last two seasons.
