NEWTON, Mass. - No. 21 Boston College scored two first-half goals to defeat No. 7 Wake Forest 2-0 in the final game of the regular season Thursday evening at the Newton Soccer Complex in Newton, Mass, handing the Demon Deacons their first road loss of the year.
The Deacons and Eagles end the ACC schedule in a tie for fourth place in the conference with 18 points, but by virtue of its victory tonight, BC won the head-to-head tiebreaker, earning the No. 4 seed and the right to host fifth-seeded Wake Forest in a rematch on Sunday afternoon in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
Playing in difficult conditions, with temperatures dipping into the 30s and snow falling in the second half, Wake Forest (12-3-3, 5-2-3 ACC) struggled to find its footing and was forced to play from behind early after Boston College's Gibby Wagner scored in the 11th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Julia Bouchelle tacked on another goal for BC (11-4-2, 6-4-0) in the 31st minute, and goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni made one save to keep the shutout and secure the win for the Eagles.
Wake Forest will enter the ACC Tournament as the No. 5 seed for the third year in a row. In 2010, the Deacons defeated Florida State in the quarterfinals before winning back-to-back penalty kick shootouts against North Carolina and Maryland to win the program's first ACC Championship - becoming the lowest-seeded team ever to claim the tournament title.
The Deacons trailed from the start of the game as Boston College's Wagner finished a pass from Victoria DiMartino at the far post to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Rachel Nuzzolese had two chances soon after to equalize, taking a shot from 18 yards that Mastroianni tipped over the bar and following it up a few minutes later with a free kick from 22 yards that went just high.
The Eagles struck again in the 31st minute when Julia Bouchelle scored off an assist from Stephanie McCaffrey.
Katie Stengel tried to pull one back for Wake Forest as Alisha Woodson played a ball into towards Stengel who was cutting in to the right of goal, but the ball took a tough bounce and the sophomore forward just missed getting a foot on it.
