WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert have been selected to the 20-team field for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Doubles Championship, which will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. from Nov. 3-6.
Duncan and Talbert received one of two at-large bids to the draw by virtue of their No. 7 national ranking. They will compete against 19 other doubles teams from around the country, chosen from the winners of ITA Regional tournaments, the top finishers at the ITA All-American Championship, as well as a select number of wild card entrants, for one of college tennis' three individual national championships.
"The USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship is the most selective of the national championship tournaments, so it is a great honor to have Kayla and Kathryn make the draw," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "It is important to be able to showcase our program at a national level event, and it gives us the opportunity to go up there and try to win a national championship."
Duncan and Talbert hold an 8-2 record together this season and last week reached the semifinals of the ITA Carolina Regional Championship. They are the first Demon Deacon doubles team to make the field of the National Indoor Championship since Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman in 2002. Bielik and Bergman were runners-up in the 2001 tournament - Wake Forest's best-ever finish in the event.
