
Two Games Complete in Black & Gold World Series

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Gold defeated Black in Game 1 of the Wake Forest Black & Gold World Series 9-8 through seven innings on Saturday evening, while the teams tied 5-5 through eight innings on Sunday at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 1, Josh Weidie scored on a wild pitch to give Gold a 9-8, walk-off victory.
Gold was led by outfielder Evan Stephens, who went 4-for-5 at the dish with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Joe Napolitano also had a multi-hit game for Gold, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
Colin Egan earned the win, by pitching the final 1.2 innings without giving up a run and striking out two. Connor Kaden started the game for Gold and pitched 4.0 innings of no-hit baseball while striking out six and walking two.
Matt Pirro started for Black and pitched 3.0 innings. He struck out four batters and gave up three hits on the evening.
Black was held to just four hits, as Charlie Morgan, Mike Lubanski, Jack Carey and Grant Shambleyeach had a hit.
Gold held an 8-1 lead through four innings that was capped off by a four-run fourth. Stephens started the rally with a one-out double and was driven home on a two-out double by Carlos Lopez two batters later. James Harris walked in the next at bat before Stephen Schoettmer tripled to bring home two more runs. Brett Armourthen singled to score Schoettmer and give Gold a seven-run advantage.
Black answered with six runs in the top of the fifth. Shambley brought the first two runs home with a bases loaded double. Two batters later, Mark Rhine walked and reloaded the bases with two outs. Mac Williamsondrew Black's second straight walk to bring home another run, and Morgan punctuated the inning with a bases-clearing triple.
Black scored an unearned run to tie the game in the top of the sixth before Gold capture the game after the wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.
Gold again got on the board first in Game 2, thanks to a run in each of the first two innings. Stephens reached on an error to lead off the game and made his way to second on another error. A single by Conor Kenirymoved him to third, and he came around to score on a ground ball double play.
With bases loaded in the top of the second, Armour scored from third on a passed ball, and Gold had a 2-0 lead.
Black got on the board in the bottom of the second after Kevin Jordan tripled and scored one batter later on a single by Carey. Black then tied the game on an RBI single by Williamson that scored Rhine from third base in the bottom of the third.
Gold recaptured the lead in the top of the fourth, but Black got one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take its first lead of the series. Williamson had a sac fly in the fifth to tie the game before Carey and Kevin Conway each knocked RBI-doubles in the sixth to make the score 5-3 Black.
Gold responded, though, and was able to score two in the seventh to knot the game once more. Matt Martin recorded a one-out walk, and came around to score on a double by Stephens. Keniry followed with a single of his own to bring home Stephens and make the score final at 5-5.
Keniry led Gold with three hits, while Schoettmer and Armour each had two hits in Game 2. Carey was the only player for Black to record two hits in the game.
Jack Fischer started Game 2 for Gold and went four innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two. Gabe Feldmanwent three innings for Black and struck out three, while giving up just one earned run.
Wake Forest will conclude the Black & Gold World Series next weekend.
