WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference has released the bracket for the 2011 Field Hockey Tournament to be hosted at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md., beginning Thursday, Nov. 3.
Wake Forest (9-8, 2-3 ACC) earned the No. 4 seed by closing out the regular season on a seven-game winning streak, punctuated with a 1-0 victory over No. 5 seed Boston College (10-8, 1-4 ACC) on Oct. 29. The Demon Deacons and the Eagles will face one another in a rematch on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to kick off the tournament.
In Thursday's second game, slated to begin at 3:30 p.m., No. 3 seed Duke (11-6, 2-3 ACC) will take on No. 6 seed Virginia (8-11, 1-4 ACC), another rematch from the final weekend of the regular season. The thrilling game could not be decided after two overtime periods, but the Cavaliers claimed the upset victory and defeated the Blue Devils 3-2 in a stroke-off.
On Friday, the winner of the Wake Forest-Boston College game will face No. 1 seed North Carolina (18-1, 5-0 ACC), who is currently ranked No. 2 in the country in the latest NFHCA poll and was the only team to finish conference play undefeated. The Deacons dropped a pair of games to the Tar Heels in the regular season, both by 1-0 margins, and Boston College fell 2-0 in Chapel Hill on Oct. 8.
No. 2 seed and host Maryland (15-3, 4-1 ACC) will get the winner of the Duke-Virginia matchup in the second game of Friday's semifinals. The Terrapins defeated both foes in back-to-back games in the regular season, winning 6-3 at home against Virginia and taking down Duke 2-1 in Durham.
The final will take place on Sunday, Nov. 6, as the winners of the two semifinal games clash for the ACC Championship and the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The game will be carried on the ACC's regional sports network (RSN) and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
