WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Kadija Fornah recorded a career-high 25 kills and had a double-double with 14 digs to help Wake Forest edge Virginia Tech in five sets Friday night at Reynolds Gym.
The win snaps a six-match losing streak and improves Wake Forest's record to 6-18 overall and 3-11 in the ACC. Virginia Tech is now 13-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Fornah's 25 kills were a career-high by three, as she is the second Deacon to reach that total this week. Junior Andrea Beck had 26 kills against VCU on Tuesday, while she also added 14 kills against the Hokies.
Sophomore Kylie Hargreaves also reached double-figures in kills and recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Danae Rosendall made three Deacs to earn double-doubles, as she had 49 assists and 11 digs on the night.
Freshman Dani Thompson led the way on defense with 28 digs, and senior Cambrey Oehler also had a good night defensively with 15 digs.
Senior Carlin Salmon and sophomore Kristin Grissom led the way at the net with nine blocks and eight blocks, respectively.
Wake Forest was dominant early on in Set 5 and built a 10-3 lead. For the set, the Demon Deacons had 11 kills and just one error for a .476 hitting percentage, while the Hokies had nine kills, four errors and a .161 hitting percentage. Virginia Tech got within three at 13-10, but consecutive kills by Fornah helped Wake Forest end the set and win the match.
The win marks the first five-set win for Wake Forest on the season, as the Deacs had dropped their previous three matches that had gone the distance.
A late run in Set 1 helped the Deacs take the early advantage. After a 21-19 lead evaporated when VT scored two points, Wake Forest scored four straight to take the 1-0 set lead. A kill by Fornah, a block by Salmon and Kristin Grissom, a Hokie error and a kill by Salmon helped the Deacs close it out down the stretch.
At 22-22 in Set 2, the teams alternated points until the score was 24-24. The Hokies then tied the match after getting back-to-back kills and ending the set tat 26-24.
Wake Forest went back on top by taking Set 3 25-19. The Demon Deacons went up early in the set at 7-6 and never trailed again. Wake Forest built its biggest lead of the set at 20-13 after a block by Grissom and Salmon.
The Deacs were on the verge of closing out the match in four sets and held a 24-21, but the Hokies rallied to score five straight and force a decisive fifth set. Virginia Tech used three consecutive kills, an ace and a hitting error by Wake Forest to end Set 4.
Wake Forest will be in action again tomorrow when Virginia comes to town. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Reynolds Gym, and admission will be free for all spectators.
