WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the second year in a row, Wake Forest sophomore forward Katie Stengel has been selected as one of the 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, the top individual award in college soccer.
Stengel joins Adrianna French (Oklahoma State), Sarah Hagen (Milwaukee) and Ingrid Wells (Georgetown) as the only players to have made the list of semifinalists in both 2010 and 2011. Stengel is the first player in Wake Forest history to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious award.
Head coaches of NCAA Division I programs with current membership in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) will vote to determine the 2011 MAC Hermann Trophy recipient. Three finalists for the award will be announced on Friday, Dec. 9 with the winner to be announced at a press conference on Jan. 6.
A native of Melbourne, Fla., Stengel put forth the most prolific season in Wake Forest history in 2011, scoring an ACC leading 19 goals and 46 points - both school records - en route to being named the 2011 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, making her the first Demon Deacon to earn that honor. She became the first player since North Carolina's Mia Hamm in 1992 and 1993 to lead the ACC in goal-scoring in back-to-back seasons.
Stengel's eight game-winning goals were the third-highest total in the nation this season, while her 19 goals ranked as the sixth-most in all of Division I. Her first two seasons at Wake Forest have seen her notch 35 goals and 83 points, putting her only one goal and three points shy of the school career records.
Helped by the efforts of Stengel, the Demon Deacons had the best season in their history in 2011, reaching the NCAA College Cup for the first time, making a return trip to the ACC championship match and chalking up an 18-4-4 record.
Stengel was joined on the list of semifinalists by fellow ACC players Natasha Anasi (Duke), Tiffany McCarty (Florida State), Ines Jaurena (Florida State) and Morgan Brian (Virginia), giving the conference five of the fifteen players up for the award.
