Deacons Snap Skid with 6-1 Win Over VCU

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Adam Lee scored the deciding victory in his first match as a Demon Deacon as the Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated VCU 6-1 Sunday at the Indoor Tennis Center.
Lee earned the clinching point at No. 5 singles, topping Alejandro Argente 6-4, 6-3.
The No. 36 Deacons snapped a three-match losing skid to improve to 2-3 while VCU dropped their second-straight match to an ACC foe, falling to 7-3. The Deacs have now defeated the Rams in three straight seasons, with today's 6-1 scoreline marking their biggest win against VCU since 1985.
"It was a very good win for us," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "VCU has a great program, and they always play us tough."
The Deacons put out a rejuvenated lineup after getting three players back that missed last weekend's matches due to illness.
"Having our lineup at full strength made a big difference today" said Zinn. "We were able to put Tripper (Carleton) at No. 1 and everybody else where they belonged. It makes it a lot easier to win when you don't have guys playing out of position."
The Deacs got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead in the match. At the top position, Iain Atkinson and Tripper Carleton cruised past Jaime Vazquez Catoira and Camill Salomon 8-4. Danny Kreyman and Jonathan Wolff clinched the point with an 8-6 win at the No. 2 slot.
No. 109 Atkinson extended the Deacons' lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles, while No. 45 Wolff put Wake Forest on the verge of clinching with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 123 Max Wennakoski at No. 2.
After Lee clinched the match, Zach Leslie gutted out a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 decision over Jordan Dyke at the No. 6 slot for Wake Forest's fifth point.
The last match on the court was No. 3 singles, where No. 100 Danny Kreyman earned a marathon 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over Vazquez Catoira.
Wake's only setbacks of the day came at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles. At the top singles slot Tim Johannsen took down No. 87 Carleton 6-3, 6-4. At the bottom doubles position, Wennakoski and Filip Svensson edged Leslie and David Hopkins 8-7 (7).
The Demon Deacons will play another home match next weekend when they host LSU on Feb. 20 at the Indoor Tennis Center.
