CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - J.T. Terrell scored 18 points, and the Demon Deacons rallied from an 18-point deficit to get within eight points with seven minutes remaining, but they could not complete the comeback, falling 78-64 to No. 19 North Carolina at the Dean E. Smith Center Tuesday night.
Wake drops to 8-18 (1-10 ACC) while UNC improves to 19-6 (9-2 ACC).
Terrell's 18 points were helped by 4-of-8 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Gary Clark added 13 points for the Deacons, while Travis McKie grabbed nine rebounds and scored seven points. Ty Walker came off the bench to chip in eight points, four rebounds and four blocks.
The Deacons went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line, the first time that they went flawless from the charity stripe with at least 10 attempts since they made all 32 of their free throws against the Tar Heels in 2005.
Tyler Zeller led North Carolina with 18 points, also grabbing nine rebounds. Harrison Barnes was close behind with 17 points and four assists, while John Henson led all players on the boards with 13 rebounds to go with 14 points.
The teams had similar shooting night with Wake Forest going 38 percent (23-61) from the field, while North Carolina shot 37 percent (26-71). The Tar Heels big advantage came on the boards, as they outrebounded the Demon Deacons 50-35, including 19-8 on the offensive end.
North Carolina started the game hot, with John Henson and Harrison Barnes combining to score the first seven points of the contest.
After the Tar Heels pushed their lead to 13 points, the Deacons began to find their footing, hitting three times from behind the arc to get within eight points at 23-15. The Heels again surged, this time gaining a 33-15 advantage, but Wake used a 6-0 run to claw its way back to within 12 at 33-21.
North Carolina had the better of the final minutes of the half before J.T. Terrell drilled a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to send the Deacons into the locker room tailing 41-28.
A quick jumper by Terrell to start the second half brought Wake within 11 points before Barnes and Tyler Zeller hit back-to-back buckets for the Tar Heels.
With UNC leading 59-41, a crafty Tony Chennault layup sparked an 8-0 Wake Forest run that cut the Tar Heel margin to 10 points for the first time in the half. The Deacs and Heels traded points on the next few possessions, but Wake's buckets came from behind the arc to get the lead to single digits at 63-55 with 6:50 remaining.
North Carolina rallied with an 11-0 run, energized by a three-point play by Barnes, to once again get the lead back to double figures.
Ryan Keenan hit a late three-pointer to get the Deacs back within 14 points, but they would get no closer, falling 78-66.
The Demon Deacons will return to action on Saturday when they host Florida State at 1 p.m. at Joel Coliseum. The game will be shown on the ACC Network and can also be heard on the Wake Forest Sports Network from IMG College.
