GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest's Akira Fitzgerald, Andy Lubahn and Ben Newnam were named to the 2010 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team as announced by the conference Friday.
Fitzgerald earned All-ACC Academic honors for the second time, while Lubahn and Newnam were honored for the first time.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.
Fitzgerald received academic honors for the second time after first making the All-ACC Academic Team in 2008. A second-team All-ACC selection in 2010, he played 71 games in goal for the Demon Deacons in his career, and leaves the school as one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in program history. The Baltimore, Md. native ranks second among all-time Wake Forest keepers with 6,296 minutes played, third with a 0.83 goals against average, third with a .803 save percentage and fourth with 237 saves. His 13 shutouts in 2008 are tied for the school record. Fitzgerald graduated in December with a degree in communication.
Lubahn, a sophomore, started every game of the 2010 season, leading the Demon Deacons with eight goals, 16 points and four game-winning goals. His best game of the season came against Boston College where he recorded his first-career hat trick with three second-half goals to lead the Deacs to a 4-3 win over the Eagles. Lubahn has already totaled 18 goals and 36 points in his first two seasons as a Demon Deacon.
Newnam, a sophomore, was a solid contributor in the midfield for the Deacons in 2010, appearing in 16 games and making 10 starts. The native of Kernersville, N.C. finished the year with four points, including his first-career goal, which came as the game-winner against Davidson. Newnam is majoring in business and enterprise management.
