GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Tim Cooney has been named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 21-27, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
In 7.2 innings of work, Cooney completely shut down the offense of fifth-ranked Florida State in an 8-0 Demon Deacon win on Saturday. He struck out 11 batters and walked just one, with the walk coming on the second-to-last batter he faced.
Cooney scattered just five hits, while six of his 11 strikeouts came against the number two and three batters in the FSU lineup.
The Collegeville, Pa. native led Wake Forest to its first shutout over Florida State since May 21, 1999 at the ACC Championship in Durham, N.C. It also was the first time that the Demon Deacons had shut out the Seminoles in Tallahassee since April 1, 1967.
The win over Florida State pushed Cooney's season record to 3-1 on the season and is just one of his several excellent performances so far this year. His overall ERA sits a 1.50 in 42.0 innings of work, while he has been even better in ACC play with an ERA of 0.82 in 22.0 innings. Furthermore, Cooney has not allowed an earned run in his last 16.2 innings pitched.
Cooney is sharing the honor this week with NC State's Cory Mazzoni who pitched a complete-game shutout in the Wolfpack's 6-0 victory over Clemson on Friday.
This marks the second time this season that a Wake Forest player has earned weekly honors from the conference, as Matt Conway was named ACC Player of the Week on March 7. The last Demon Deacon pitcher to claim the award was Eric Niesen, who did so during the 2007 campaign.
Wake Forest will travel to Hickory, N.C. to play Appalachian State at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before making the trek to play NC State for a three-game series over the weekend.
