Deacons Earn Two 6-1 Results to Sweep Doubleheader

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 37th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team swept its only doubleheader of the season, posting 6-1 wins over William & Mary and Davidson Saturday. The match against the Tribe was played outside at Hanes Park, the Deacs' first outdoor match of the season, while the match with the Wildcats was played at the Indoor Tennis Center.
Wake Forest hops back over the .500 mark to 5-4 this season.
"We're back on the right track," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "We wanted to make sure that we got these wins before we headed out on the road next week, and we accomplished that goal."
The Demon Deacons swept the doubles point in both matches, the first times all season that they had won all three doubles matches. Iain Atkinson was the lone Wake Forest player to play doubles and singles against both opponents, posting a perfect 4-0 record.
"Iain came up big for us today," said Zinn. "It was a long day for him, especially with one match going three sets, but he had the energy to win them all. Winning four matches in a day doesn't happen that often."
In the first match against the Tribe, Wake won the doubles point, but William & Mary put a scare into the Deacons by winning the first set in four of the six singles matches. However, the Deacs came back strong, earning three-set wins in three of those four matches, while picking up straight-set wins in two others to take the 6-1 win.
"It was a little scary for us after that first set of singles," said Zinn. "But after that we really blew them out. It was encouraging that we were able to come back so strong against a good opponent."
The Deacons took the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches for the first time this season. Danny Kreyman and Jonathan Wolff got the first win at No. 2, blowing past John Banks and Illja Orre 8-22. Wolff and Kreyman lead the team with a 5-2 dual match doubles record this season.
Tripper Carleton and Atkinson clinched the point at the top position with an 8-5 victory over Ben Guthrie and Sebastien Vidal. At No. 3, David Hopkins and Zach Leslie fell behind 6-3, but rallied to force a tiebreak which they won to take the match 8-7 (3).
The Deacons got quick wins at No. 2 and No. 5 to jump out to a 3-0 lead. At No. 2, Wolff cruised by Ben Guthrie 6-3, 6-0, and at No. 5 Adam Lee took down Ben Hoogland 6-2, 6-3.
However, the Tribe took the first set in all the remaining matches, meaning that the Deacons would have to go the full three sets in at least one of them to earn the win. After Wake had forced Nos. 3, 4 and 6 into third sets, Anton Andersson got William & Mary on the board with a 7-5, 7-5 win over No. 84 Tripper Carleton at No. 1.
Hopkins clinched the match for the Deacons at No. 6, rebounding from a first set loss to dominate Daniel Mihalov in the final two sets 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-0. Atkinson got Wake Forest's fifth point at No. 4 with a 5-7, 6-, 6-2 win over Sebastien Vidal.
At No. 3, Danny Kreyman dropped the opening set but won the second and led 4-0 in the third set before rain and Wake Forest's looming match against Davidson forced it to go unfinished.
In the Deacs' second match of the day against Davidson, they again swept the doubles point, although with a bit of a different lineup. At No. 3, Conner Sherwood and Leslie dispatched Chris Mark and Kevin Moore 6-2. Hopkins and Lee clinched the point at No. 2, beating Ethan Kallick and Walker Lyons 8-2. At No. 1, the teams played a tiebreak at 5-5 since the point had been decided, and Carleton and Atkinson won easily to take the match 6-5 (2).
Winning the point allowed Zinn to give some different players a chance in the singles lineup, and Amogh Prabhakar made the most of the opportunity, earning his first career dual-match singles win at No. 6 to give the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead. Atkinson followed soon after with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Joe Schafer at No. 2 to put Wake Forest on the verge of clinching at 3-0.
After Davidson got a point from Calum Gee at No. 5, Lee clinched the match for Wake Forest in his first time in the top half of the lineup, taking down Arie Hefter 6-2, 6-4.
Wake took the last two matches on the court, as Zach Leslie took two tough sets from Walker Lyons at No. 4 and Danny Kreyman outlasted Chris Mark 7-6 (6), 5-7, 1-0 (3).
The Demon Deacons will leave on Tuesday for their Spring Break trip to Texas where they will take on Rice on March 11.
