CARY, N.C. - Pairings have been announced by the ACC conference office for the 2011 ACC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships, which begin Thursday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The Wake Forest men's tennis team has received the No. 7 seed and will open against 10th-seeded Clemson, while the women's tennis team enters its draw as the No. 12 seed and will face 5th-seeded Florida State.
Both the Demon Deacon men's and women's teams will play their first match at noon on Thursday, giving Wake Forest fans the opportunity to support both teams at once. Their respective quarterfinal matches should they advance are slated for noon on Friday.
The Wake Forest men's tennis team has reached the semifinals of the ACC Championships in each of the past four seasons, making it one of only two schools, along with perennial powerhouse Virginia, to accomplish that feat.
The Demon Deacons defeated Clemson, this year's first-round opponent, 6-1 on the road during the regular season. If the Deacs defeat the Tigers, they will face second-seeded North Carolina in the quarterfinals Friday. The two sides met in last year's ACC Quarterfinals in a dramatic match that saw Steven Forman come back and win after trailing 5-0 in the final set and Danny Kreyman win the deciding match in a third-set tiebreak to push the Deacons past the Tar Heels. North Carolina got the better of Wake Forest this season, pulling out a narrow 4-3 victory in Winston-Salem.
The Wake Forest women's tennis team will face a tough first-round opponent in the Seminoles, who enter the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the conference after defeating No. 3 Duke and No. 4 North Carolina last weekend. FSU defeated Wake 6-1 in Tallahassee in their only regular season meeting. The winner of Thursday's match will face fourth-seeded Virginia on Friday in the quarterfinals.
The Deacons do have some history on their side. Wake has won its first ACC Tournament match on all but three occasions, including an upset of NC State in the first round last season.
A championship-long ticket costs $14 for adults and $10 for seniors, students and youth. Single-day passes are available for $7 for adults and $5 for seniors, students and youth. Children 8 & under are admitted free to all sessions.
