CARY, N.C. - Fifth-seeded Florida State won the doubles point and picked up three straight set singles victories to down 12th-seeded Wake Forest 4-0 in the first round of the 2011 ACC Women's Tennis Championship at Cary Tennis Park Thursday.

"It was a tough April for us," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "We were playing our best in March when we had our entire lineup intact, but the injuries really caught up to us down the stretch."

The No. 61 Demon Deacons end the year at 6-16, while the No. 18 Seminoles move to 13-7.

Emilee Malvehy and Martina Pavelec improved to 11-4 this season with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Seminoles picked up victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.

Federica Suess was first off the court for FSU in singles, topping Anna Mydlowska 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 5 position to stretch the lead to 2-0. With the victory, Suess became the Seminoles; all-time singles wins leader.

No. 37 Katie Rybakova earned the Noles' third point, getting past No. 37 Pavelec 6-3, 6-2 at the top position, and Amy Sargeant finished it off at No. 6, taking down Brigita Bercyte 6-4, 6-0 for the clinching win.

The Deacs were putting up a fight in the other matches. At No. 2, Emilee Malvehy rebounded from a rough opening frame to force a third set against Francesca Segarelli. Ryann Cutillo held a set lead over Ruth Seaborne at No. 4, and Kayla Duncan had just started a third set with No. 56 Noemie Scharle.

Selections to the NCAA Individual Championships will be announced on May 3.
