RALEIGH, N.C. - Danny Kreyman won the only match for Wake Forest as second-seeded North Carolina pulled out No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles in second-set tiebreaks to take the ACC Championships quarterfinal match 4-1 Friday, keeping the seventh-seeded Demon Deacons out of the ACC semifinals for the first time in five seasons.
The match was played at the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Center at NC State because of rain in Cary, N.C. The Tar Heels improve to 15-6, while the Demon Deacons fall to 13-11.
The 15th-ranked Tar Heels earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the doubles point and jump out to a 1-0 lead.
With only four indoor courts at NC State, only the top four singles matches were able to start immediately after doubles.
Danny Kreyman momentarily tied the match for No. 32 Wake Forest, taking down No. 125 Joey Burkhardt at No. 4 singles. Kreyman had trailed 5-2 in the first set, before winning the next five games to take it 7-5. The Long Beach, N.Y. native jumped ahead 5-2 in the second set, eventually closing out a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
The Tar Heels had won the first set on the first three courts and looked primed to run away with the match, but the Demon Deacons woke up in the second set as they attempted to extend the match. At No. 1 singles, No. 84 Jonathan Wolff ran out to a 4-1 second set lead over No. 22 Jose Hernandez, while Tripper Carleton at No. 2 and Iain Atkinson at No. 3 all stayed close with their North Carolina opponents.
As the second sets wore on, the Tar Heels jumped up a break on every court, with each North Carolina player having the opportunity to serve out their match at 5-4. But none of them could successfully do it.
First Wolff broke Hernandez and then held to go ahead 6-5. Carleton broke No. 81 Brennan Boyajian at both 5-4 and 6-5, and Atkinson broke Stefan Hardy at 5-4. All three matches would go to tiebreaks where the Tar Heels finally were able to close them out, sweeping every court to earn the 4-1 win.
The Demon Deacons will await selections for the NCAA Championships, which will be released May 3.
