ATHENS, Ga. - Wake Forest senior Natalie Sheary fired a final round 1-under 71 and recorded her third top-10 of the spring as the Demon Deacons finished ninth at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
Wake Forest rebounded from a tough second round 297 to finish with a 3-under 285 which was its lowest round of the weekend. Head coach Dianne Dailey thought her team handled the best ball scoring format well.
"I think the students really enjoyed the format," said Dailey. "This was the first time they could really root each other on and see just how each one was doing. The only drawback was the long rounds but other than that, it was good to play together as a team."
Sheary made a double-bogey seven on the first hole of the day but she bounced-back with four birdies and just one bogey the rest of the way for her 11th round of the year at par or better. Coupled with her 74 and 75 to start the tournament, the West Hartford, Conn., native finished tied for sixth at 4-over par. That was her fourth top-10 of the year and her third this spring.
"I thought Natalie played very well today," Dailey said. "She had a tough start but she didn't let that get to her and she played beautifully the rest of the day."
Junior Cheyenne Woods had a bit of an up-and-down final round as she made four birdies and five bogeys for a round of 1-over 73. The 73 was her lowest round of the weekend and it vaulted her into a tie for 11th at 7-over par.
Sophomore Michelle Shin was 4-over through four holes on Sunday but finished with three birdies and just one bogey in the final 14 holes to post a 2-over 74. She finished the weekend in a tie for 15th at 8-over par.
"Cheyenne, Michelle and Natalie all hit the ball great today and gave themselves some really nice opportunities at birdie," said Dailey. "We just didn't make as many putts as we would have liked but you can see it coming together. All three of them are really close to breaking through and being under-par every tournament."
Senior Allie Bodemann and freshman Olafia Kristinsdottir each made birdie on the final hole of the day on Sunday to finish the tournament in style. Bodemann carded a 77 and finished tied for 85th while Kristinsdottir posted an 80 and finished tied for 101st.
"Allie and Olafia also had good weekends," said Dailey. "The last two weeks have been good for each of them and I think they are playing with a little more confidence now."
Second round leader Alabama cemented its victory with a solid final round of 5-under 283. The Crimson Tide finished eight shots ahead of Duke and Purdue, who each finished at 4-over par. Arkansas and Florida each fired the low round of the day, 11-under 277, as the Razorbacks finished fourth at 5-over and the Gators took fifth at 6-over.
In the individual competition, Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora used her home course knowledge to fire a final round 67 and claim a two-shot victory over Alabama's Emily Tubert. Silva Zamora (-4) and Tubert (-2) were the only two players in the 120-player field to break par on the weekend.
This was the final event for the Demon Deacons before they head to Sedgefield Country Club in two weeks for the ACC Women's Golf Championships. Wake has won each of the last two ACC titles and has also had the individual medalist each of the last two years. Sheary won the event as a sophomore in 2009 and Shin took home the title as a freshman last year.
"I think the last couple of tournaments have really helped build our confidence a little bit," Dailey said. "You can see the improvements we've made since the start of the spring. I think if we tighten-up a couple of things in the next two weeks of practice, we'll have a good shot at the ACCs."
