STANFORD, Calif. - The Wake Forest women's tennis season came to an end Friday night as the Demon Deacons' 21st-ranked doubles team of Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert fell 7-5, 6-3 to top-seeded Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova of California in the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
The No. 1 Golden Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, before the Deacs rallied back to tie the score at 5-5. But after holding serve, Andersson and Juricova earned a break in the final game of the set to take the opening frame 7-5. In the second set, Cal seized an early break and would never relinquish it, serving out the rest of the set to seal the victory. Andersson and Juricova advance to face Northwestern's Linda Abu Meshrefova and Nida Hamilton in the quarterfinals.
Duncan and Talbert ended a successful 2010-11 campaign with a 14-7 mark after leading Wake Forest at the top of the doubles lineup all season. They were the first Demon Deacon team to make it out of the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship since 2002, and peaked at No. 14 in the national rankings this season, the highest mark for a Wake team since the 2002 season.
