WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Last week, former Wake Forest All-American goalkeeper Will Hesmer made headlines for the Columbus Crew, posting his 40th career shutout with five saves - including a critical penalty kick stop in the 73rd minute - in a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday, July 7.
13 other Wake Forest soccer alums are currently on roster with Major League Soccer squads, including Michael Lahoud, who started twice and saw action at midfielder for a full 180 minutes during a 1-1 week for Chivas USA.
Brian Carroll played a full 90 minutes in the middle for the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, July 9, recording a foul in a scoreless draw against the San Jose Earthquakes. Another WFU soccer product, Ike Opara, logged 90 minutes at defender and recorded four fouls. Former Demon Deacons-turned-Quakes Sam Cronin, a midfielder, and Scott Sealy, a forward, were unused substitutes.
On Monday, July 4, Pat Phelan started and played a full 90 minutes for the New England Revolution in a 3-3 draw against Real Salt Lake.
Winger Austin da Luz entered in the 82nd minute and logged seven minutes in the New York Red Bulls 1-0 loss to D.C. United on Saturday, July 9. Teammate Stephen Keel was also an unused substitute in the contest.
James Riley was a starter at defender for the Seattle Sounders and logged 90 minutes in a 3-2 win over the Portland Timbers on Sunday, July 11. Wells Thompson also played a full match, starting at midfield for the Colorado Rapids, on Saturday, July 9 in a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
