WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former Wake Forest men's soccer standout-turned Colorado Rapids' middle, Wells Thompson, had a superb all-around game, contributing to three goals on Saturday, July 16 and highlighting the action of former Demon Deacons in Major League Soccer over the weekend.
Thompson connected on an early goal, his first of the season, from 18-yards out and later recorded his first assist of the year. The mid also spurred a third score with a well-placed corner kick in a 4-3 loss to the Seattle Sounders. Former Deac James Riley also played the full 90 at defender for the Sounders, helping his club climb within one point of the Western Conference lead.
13 other Wake Forest soccer alums are on roster in the MLS, including former All-American goalkeeper Will Hesmer, who recorded another clean sheet for the Columbus Crew, making five stops against the San Jose Earthquakes in a scoreless draw. Sam Cronin entered in plus time for the Quakes.
Brian Carroll logged a full match at defender for the Philadelphia Union in a 3-0 win against the New England Revolution. Another Deacon product, Pat Phelan, went a full 90 for the Revolution as Zach Schilawksi entered as a sub in the 79th minute.
Another transaction was announced on Monday, July 18 as Austin da Luz was traded from the New York Red Bulls to the D.C. United for an international roster spot. The second-year player had one goal and one assist in four starts for the Red Bulls this season.
