WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team began the 2011 season with its first practice of the year Friday morning at Reynolds Gym.
Under the guidance of seventh-year head coach Heather Kahl Holmes, the Demon Deacons are hoping to improve upon one of its best seasons in school history.
In 2010, Wake Forest finished the year with a 19-12 record and an 11-9 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 11 wins in conference play are the most by any Demon Deacon squad in school history.
There were several familiar faces in the gym, as Wake Forest is bringing back nine players from last year's team, including 2010 All-ACC selection Andrea Beck and 2010 Preseason All-ACC selection Kadija Fornah.
The duo will look to pace the Deacon offense as they did a year ago. Fornah led the 2010 squad with 327 kills, while Beck was just behind her in second place with 312 kills.
Beck will also serve as a co-captain this year alongside senior defensive specialist Cambrey Oehler.
Joining the nine returners in the gym was a group of five freshmen who will look to have an immediate impact on the Wake Forest volleyball program. Mary Hoey and Jazmen Russell will be seeking time on the outside, while Ashlee Rusk (MB), Danae Rosendall (S) and Dani Thompson (L/DS) will also be competing for playing time.
The volleyball team will have a short rest before returning to the gym at 5 p.m. for their second session of the day.
The Deacs open their season on September 2 when they host Arkansas at the Deacon Invitational at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym. Admission for the season opener, as well as all home Wake Forest volleyball matches, will be free for all spectators.
