WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest forward Katie Stengel was named the ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring two goals and two assists to lead the Demon Deacon to opening weekend road victories over Auburn and Central Florida.
Stengel's prolific weekend started against the Tigers when she notched two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist to help the Deacs to a 4-1 win over the defending SEC West Division champions. The sophomore assisted on Marisa Park's opening goal and then found the back of the net herself in the 53rd minute when she took a pass from Kristen Meier and made a 40-yard run through the midfield before hammering a shot past Auburn goalkeeper Chandler Hillen. Her second goal game a little more than 10 minutes later when she made a deep run into the box and got on the end of a cross from Jordan Feger, volleying it home to extend the Deacon lead to 3-1.
Despite being held without a shot for only the second time in her career against UCF, Stengel provided the key assist on the game's only goal, linking up with Rachel Nuzzolese on a combination play before laying the ball off to Nuzzolese who unleashed a cracking shot from 19-yards that found the back of the net.
The reigning ACC Freshman of the Year, Stengel has now totaled 18 goals and 43 points in 26 games wearing the old gold and black. The Melbourne, Fla. native is taking home ACC Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career after first winning the award for her performance during the week of Sept. 5, 2010.
Stengel also received national recognition for her weekend performance, making Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week and CollegeSoccer360.com's list of Primetime Performers of the Week.
Stengel and the rest of the Demon Deacons will face another road match against a team that made the NCAA Tournament last season when they travel to take on UNC Greensboro on Friday at 6 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
