CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Kayla Duncan and freshman Karen Forman each reached the semifinals of their singles flights to highlight the Wake Forest women's tennis team's efforts on the first day of its fall season at the UVa Fall Invitational.

Duncan started off the day with the Deacons' first victory over a ranked player this season, dominating No. 125 Marlen Mesgarzadeh of William & Mary 6-4, 6-0 in her first match before crusing past Virginia's Caryssa Peretz 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the A Singles draw. Duncan will face NC State's Joelle Kissell in the semifinals tomorrow.

Making her Wake Forest debut, Forman found success in the C Singles bracket, easily defeating UNCG's Devon Sutherland 6-1, 6-1 in her first match in the Old Gold and Black before gutting out a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 win over Winthrop's Giovanna Portioli in the quarterfinals. Forman will take on NC State's Elisha Hande in the semifinals.

Duncan and Kathryn Talbert, the nation's seventh-ranked doubles team, got their 2011-12 campaign off to a strong start, taking down Old Dominion's Diana Ivanova and Melissa Ensal-Olguin (ODU) 8-4.

Joining Forman in making their Wake Forest debuts were fellow freshmen Rebecca Siegler and Zane Zarina. Both rookies lost their opening singles match before picking up a win in the consolation.

Talbert defeated VCU's Josefin Hjertquist in straight sets in the first round of the A Singles draw before falling to No. 74 Erin Vierra of Virginia.

The tournament will continue tomorrow with both singles and doubles action.
