CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The highest-ranked Wake Forest doubles team in nine years, No. 7 Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert were victorious in their first tournament of the 2011-12 season, defeating UNC Greensboro's Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins to win the A Doubles championship at the UVA Fall Invitational.
The Deacon tandem stormed through the draw this weekend, defeating teams from NC State, Old Dominion and Marshall before topping the Spartan's Dougherty and Wilkins 8-4 in the title match.
Duncan also earned fourth place in the A Singles draw, falling to Virginia's Li Xi, the fifth-ranked newcomer in the country, in Sunday's third-place playoff.
Playing in her first collegiate event, Karen Forman took third place in the C Singles draw, outlasting VCU's Marketa Placha 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) in the playoff match.
Fellow freshman Rebecca Siegler also ended the tournament on a high note, topping Marshall's Ellie Ball 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8) to win the C Singles consolation title.
The Demon Deacons will have next weekend off before they host the Wake Forest Invitational from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2. The tournament will be the first-ever collegiate event at Wake Forest's new outdoor tennis center, which recently hosted the ATP's Winston-Salem Open.
