BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State halted the Wake Forest volleyball team's momentum from winning the Black & Gold Challenge with a 3-0 sweep over the Demon Deacons Tuesday evening at the Holmes Center.

The Mountaineers (8-6) took the three sets 25-23, 25-16, 25-18, as Wake Forest falls to 4-6 on the year.

Reigning ACC Co-Player of the Week Carlin Salmon led the Wake Forest offense with 11 kills on 25 swings. Outside hitters Kadija Fornah and Jazmen Russell both had eight kills, while Fornah also led the team with 15 digs on the night.

With her eight kills, Fornah is now just three kills away from becoming the eighth player in Wake Forest history to eclipse the 1,000-kill mark for her career.

Freshman setter Danae Rosendall had 26 and five digs, as she was also efficient on offense with three kills on just four attempts. Fellow freshman Dani Thompson was just behind Fornah in the dig column with 14 of her own.

As a team, Appalachian State had 54 kills compared to just 36 for Wake Forest and hit .323 on the night. The Mountaineers were led by three players with 10 or more kills, as Anna Wagner (18), Kelly Rhein (10) and Meghann Forshey (10) all reached double figures.

Wake Forest had its best chance in Set 1, losing by just two points. ASU took the early advantage with a 7-3 lead, but Wake Forest battled back and eventually tied the set at 14-14 after a kill by Russell. The Deacs then took a two-point lead at 19-17, leading to a timeout for the Mountaineers.

Out of the timeout, ASU answered with three straight points and took a 20-19. After a Deacon timeout, back-to-back kills by Salmon and Fornah helped Wake Forest take a 21-20 lead, and another error by Appalachian State put the Deacs up 22-20.

Wake Forest only scored one more point the rest of the set on a service error by the Mountaineers, as ASU closed Set 1 on a 5-1 run to take a 1-0 advantage.

Appalachian State never trailed in Set 2 and took the lead for good in Set 3 at 6-5.

The Demon Deacons will look to remain undefeated in conference play this weekend when Clemson and Georgia Tech come to town. Wake Forest will host the Tigers on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at 5 p.m. Both matches will be in Reynolds Gym and will be free for all spectators.
