WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Hosting the first-ever collegiate event at the new Wake Forest Tennis Center, the Demon Deacon women's doubles team swept its singles matches at the Wake Forest Invitational Friday.
All six Deacons were victorious in their opening singles matches. Kayla Duncan, the No. 2 seed in the A Singles Draw topped Davidson's Stephanie Synn 6-2, 7-5. In B Doubles, Ryann Cutillo fought through a tough first set to prevail 7-6 (2), 6-2 over Olga Blank of UNC Wilmington.
In the C Singles Draw, Zane Zarina shut out Borislava Nikolova of Campbell 6-0, 6-0. Fellow rookie Karen Forman outlasted Louisville's Amelia Harris 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2 in D Singles. Wake Forest's third freshman, Rebecca Siegler, the top seed in the E Singles Draw, cruised past UNC Wilmington's Miller Hales 6-0, 6-2. Brigita Bercyte rounded out the Demon Deacon effort in F Singles, downing Richmond's Nil Horoz 6-1, 6-3.
Doubles would not go as well with none of the three Deacon teams earning a victory. Play will continue tomorrow morning with one round of doubles followed by singles play. Admission is free all weekend.
