CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest women's tennis senior Kayla Duncan earned her best singles victory as a Demon Deacon Monday, topping Virginia's 30th-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh as the Deacs wrapped up play at the UVa Winter Classic.
Duncan, who is ranked 93rd nationally herself, took down Hardenbergh by a 7-5, 6-3 scoreline. The Cavalier senior is the highest-ranked player that Duncan has defeated in her two years at Wake Forest and is the second-best win of her college career after she defeated then-No. 27 Krista Damico of Texas during her sophomore year playing for TCU.
The Winston-Salem, N.C. native was the lone Deacon to score a victory on the final day of competition, though she came close to picking up a doubles win as well, teaming with freshman Rebecca Siegler to drop a 9-8 (3) decision to Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra. Siegler went three sets with her ranked singles opponent, No. 76 Maria Fucillo of Virginia, but eventually succumbed 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
The Demon Deacons will open dual match play on Jan. 22 when they play host to Georgia State and Winthrop in a doubleheader at the Indoor Tennis Center. The Deacs will face the Panthers at noon and the Eagles at 4:30 p.m.
