WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Karen Forman and Xue Zhang teamed up to defeat a team from Elon in the C Doubles Final to claim the first tournament title of their college careers Sunday at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Forman, a sophomore, and Zhang, a freshman, took down Elon's Briana Berne and Vivian Stavreva 8-2 in the C Doubles championship match.
"I was very happy with how well Karen and Xue played doubles this weekend," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "They really dominated the C Doubles flight."
Brigita Bercyte was also victorious Sunday, downing Soumeya Anane from UNC Greensboro 7-6 (5), 2-6, 1-0 (8) in the E Singles third-place match. Bercyte had trailed 6-2 in the 10-point tiebreak played in lieu of a third set before rallying to win the next seven points and eventually take it 10-8.
Forman took home second place in the C Singles draw, falling to Louisville's Mandy Brown in the final. Kasey Gardiner and Kathryn Talbert finished as runners-up in the A Double flight after losing to UNCG's Alex Whitehead and Niltooli Wilkins.
Wake Forest will host the ITA Carolina Regional from Oct. 18-22, which will feature the top collegiate players from North Carolina and South Carolina.
