Deacs Head South to Face Notre Dame

Wake Forest will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to take on Notre Dame in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Championship on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Demon Deacons are a No. 3 seed in the tournament, and the Fighting Irish are unseeded.
The Deacons defeated Georgia Southern 4-0 in the opening round of the tournament. The Irish downed Wisconsin-Milwaukee in their first round match.
The winner of Friday's second-round match will take on the winner of the Florida-UCF match on Sunday at 1 p.m., also in Gainesville.

Wake Forest scored four second-half goals to defeat Georgia Southern 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Championship. It was the Demon Deacons' largest margin of victory in an NCAA tournament game since 1996.
Katie Stengel scored twice against the Eagles to push her team-leading scoring totals to nine goals and 21 points. She was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week for her performance.
With two assists against Georgia Southern, Kristen Meier moved into a tie for fifth-place in Wake Forest history with 18 career helpers.
Katie Stengel (first team) and Aubrey Bledsoe (second team) were named to the 2012 All-ACC Team. Both are repeat honorees. Stengel is the first person in Wake Forest history to earn first-team honors three times.
Stengel is returning to her home state of Florida this weekend. She grew up in Melbourne, Fla. on the coast.
Aubrey Bledsoe, Jackie Logue and Katie Stengel were all named to the Capital One Academic All-District team for the second year in a row. Logue made the team for the third year running.
Playing 90 minutes in goal against Georgia Southern, Aubrey Bledsoe moved into first place in school history for minutes played by a goalkeeper.
Wake Forest is one of seven ACC schools to advance to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Tournament History

Wake Forest is making its 17th-straight NCAA Championship appearance, which ranks as the sixth-longest active streak in the country. The Demon Deacons reached the second round for the seventh-straight year.
The Demon Deacons are one of the tournament's 16 national seeds for the seventh year in a row. They join Florida, Florida State and North Carolina as the only teams to be seeded in every edition of the tournament since 2006.
Last season, Wake Forest advanced to its first College Cup with wins over Oakland, Boston University, Penn State and UCF before falling to Duke in the semifinals.
Wake Forest and Notre Dame are meeting in the postseason for the first time. The Demon Deacons are 0-1-0 all-time in NCAA tournament matches in Gainesville, Fla. falling to Florida in 1996 in their first-ever tournament appearance.
