WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team downed ETSU 5-2 and came up just short of an upset in a 4-3 loss to No. 29 Brown in its final doubleheader of the year at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex Sunday.
The Demon Deacons were dominant in doubles against both the Buccaneers and the Bears, sweeping all three matches against both opponents. Kayla Duncan also won both of her singles matches, dropping only three games in the process, to post a 4-0 record in singles and doubles in the two dual matches.
Looking for its first win over a top 30 team in two seasons, Wake Forest put a serious scare into Brown. The outcome was not decided until the final match on the court where Ryann Cutillo came up on the wrong end of a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 2. The Deacons have dropped five 4-3 decisions this year.
Cutillo rallied in the second match of the day against ETSU to pick up the clinching point, easily beating Giulia Andreazza 6-2, 6-1.
The Demon Deacons swept all three doubles matches against ETSU to take a 1-0 lead. Ryann Cutillo and Rebecca Siegler swept past Karina Kedzo and Kelsey Williams at No. 2, and Karen Forman and Brigita Bercyte clinched the point at No. 3 with an 8-2 victory over Giulia Andreazza and Jessica Brumit. No. 56 Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert rounded out the Deacon wins, taking down Paula Jaime and Marine Wieliczko 8-5.
Wieliczko briefly tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Talbert, who was playing at less than full strength, at No. 3 singles, before her doubles partner No. 66 Duncan restored the Wake Forest lead with a 6-2, 6-2 thumping of Jaime at No. 1.
Siegler made the Wake Forest advantage 3-1, surviving a tough first set to defeat Kedzo 6-3, 6-0, and Ryann Cutillo clinched the match at No. 2, topping Andreazza 6-2, 6-1.
Forman picked up the Demon Deacons' final point in a marathon 6-4, 6-3 win over Diana Navrostska at the No. 5 position.
The Demon Deacons also dominated doubles against Brown, sweeping all three matches. Brigita Bercyte and Karen Forman finished first at No. 3, dispatching Cassandra Herzberg and Sarah Kandath 8-2. Wake Forest's 56th-ranked duo of Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert clinched the doubles point at the top position, defeating Carissa Aboubakare and Jessica Harrow by an 8-2 scoreline. Ryann Cutillo and Rebecca Siegler completed the sweep at No. 2 where they took down Ariel Caldwell and Misia Krasowski 8-5.
No. 66 Duncan carried the momentum into singles where she put forth a dominating performance at the top position, cruising past Krasowski 6-0, 6-0 to push the Wake Forest advantage to 2-0.
But the Bears mounted a comeback, sweeping the bottom three positions to take their first lead of the day at 3-2. Talbert pulled the Deacs back even with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kandath at No. 3, leaving the match to be decided at the No. 2 spot.
At No. 2, Cutillo had dropped a tight first set, but had battled back to go up a break 2-1 in the second set. But her opponent, Harrow, exploded to win four straight games to go ahead 5-2. Cutillo battled back to 5-3 and saved two match points on Harrow's serve, but the Brown player converted the third one to seal the 6-4, 6-3 victory and overall win for the Bears.
Wake Forest will take its Spring Break trip this week when it travels to take on UNC Wilmington on Thursday at 11 a.m.
