WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team has received an invitation to the Women's National Invitation Tournament and will travel to Charlotte for the opening round on Thursday evening. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from the Halton Arena.
This is Wake Forest's fifth postseason appearance and its fourth trip to the WNIT. All three of the previous WNIT appearances have come under current head coach Mike Petersen. The Deacons went 2-1 in 2005 with wins over Charlotte and South Florida before falling at West Virginia. Wake then lost in the opening round in both 2009 and 2010.
Wake Forest (19-13) is coming off its best run in the ACC Tournament. The Deacs defeated Virginia Tech in the opening round and then knocked-off No. 7 Miami in the quarterfinals before falling in the semis to eventual champion Maryland. That marked the first time Wake Forest had won back-to-back games in the same ACC Tournament and it was its first semifinal appearance since 1988.
Charlotte is 16-13 on the year but finished by losing five of its final six. The 49ers had a streak midway through the season in which they won nine of 11 contests and were 10-3 on at home this season.
Wake Forest was unable to bid to host an opening round game due to a previously booked event at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. All 63 games of the WNIT will take place on the campus of a participating school.
The winner of Thursday night's game will take on the winner of the James Madison and Davidson game which is also being played on Thursday at JMU. The second round site is yet to be determined.
