RICHMOND, Va. - Despite playing a player short, the Wake Forest women's tennis team came up just short of a road upset of No. 42 VCU, falling 4-3 to the Rams in Richmond on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons' (1-7) three points came at the top three singles positions - all in third sets
Ryann Cutillo was the lone Deacon to play out a full third set, topping Alex Bara 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
No. 66 Kayla Duncan at No. 1 and Rebecca Siegler at No. 3 both won 10-point tiebreaks that were played in lieu of a third set. Duncan downed Ana Bara 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (8). Siegler, a freshman defeated Daria Yakauleva 6-7 (6), 6-1, 1-0 (9) at No. 3 to earn her first-career victory in the top half of the lineup.
Wake Forest was again playing without Kathryn Talbert, who left the team due to a family emergency, forcing the Deacons to forfeit No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
The Deacons dropped the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions, losing the doubles point for the third straight match after winning five in a row to start the season, and also fell at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to give the Rams (10-4) the win.
Wake Forest will host Brown and ETSU next Sunday, March 11, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The Deacons fill face the Bears at 11 a.m. and the Buccaneers at 4:30 p.m.
