WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 2012 Wake Forest volleyball team is set to play a 32-match schedule, including 11 matches against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams, as announced by head coach Heather Kahl Holmes on Tuesday.
The Demon Deacons will open up the 2012 season on the road when they travel to local rival High Point on Tuesday, August 28, at 7 p.m. This will mark the first time that Wake Forest has opened up the season on the road since the 2007 season.
Wake Forest will host a pair of tournaments this season, including the Deacon Invitational on August 31-September 1 and the Black and Gold Challenge on Sept. 14-15. The Deacs are scheduled to play UNCW, Davidson and Winthrop at the Deacon Invitational, while they will play Toledo, Campbell and Appalachian State at the Black and Gold Challenge.
Seven teams on the 2012 schedule appeared in the 2011 NCAA Volleyball Tournament, as the Deacs will play 11 matches against those teams.
The Marquette Tournament on September 7-8 will feature three of those teams. The Demon Deacons will face Michigan, who advanced to the Sweet 16, as well as Marquette and Northern Iowa, who were each knocked out in the second round. Wake Forest will also play Eastern Illinois that weekend in Milwaukee.
After the early-season tournaments and invitationals are finished, the Demon Deacons will face just one more non-conference opponent in Furman on September 25 at home.
Starting on September 19 with NC State on the road, Wake Forest will embark on the always-difficult Atlantic Coast Conference schedule. The Deacs are scheduled to play home and away with every team in the conference except for Virginia and Virginia Tech.
The longest homestand of the season will be from October 5-13 when the Demon Deacons will play four straight matches at Reynolds Gym. Wake Forest will play Boston College, Maryland, Georgia Tech and Clemson during that stretch.
Four ACC teams made the NCAA Tournament a season ago, including Florida State, Miami, North Carolina and Duke. The Seminoles put together the best run, advancing all the way to the Final Four before being ousted by eventual national champions UCLA.
Wake Forest is set to play 16 matches at home, 13 on the road and three at a neutral site.
