HIROSHIMA, Japan - Wake Forest junior Katie Stengel entered as a substitute in the 61st minute as the United States Under-20 National Team defeated Ghana 4-0 Monday in its opening match of the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The Americans took maximum points from the match thanks to a hat trick by Maya Hayes and an own goal allowed by the Ghanaians. Stengel came off the bench in the 61st minute to replace Chioma Ubogagu at the center forward position.
Stengel had a golden scoring opportunity in the 73rd minute when she broke through the Ghana defense on the left side and tried to slide a shot just inside the far post from 16 yards, but the attempt went inches wide.
The junior All-American is the second Wake Forest player to earn a cap for the U.S. in a U-20 World Cup after Kaley Fountain, who played one match for the American side during the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile.
After one match, the U.S. sits tied atop Group D with Germany, which dispatched China 4-0 on Monday. The Americans will face the Chinese in their next match on Aug. 23 at 5:55 a.m. EDT on ESPNU and ESPN3.
