Doubles Leads Deacs at Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest's Kathryn Talbert and Kasey Gardiner teamed up to defeat Virginia freshmen Julia Elbaba and Maci Epstein to highlight the Demon Deacons' efforts on the first day of the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
Gardiner and Talbert posted a narrow 9-8 (3) win over Elbaba and Epstein to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals. Also winning in doubles were Karen Forman and Xue Zhang in the B Doubles draw, who defeated Winthrop's Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu 8-5.
In singles, Rebecca Siegler advanced to the quarterfinals of the B Singles draw with a win over Furman's Jenny Porter, before falling to UNCG's Annette Rios in the quarterfinals. Freshman Andrea Retolaza-Andrade picked up a win over UNCG's Alex Whitehead in the A-1 Singles consolation bracket, and fellow rookie Xue Zhang took down Furman's Kelly Sullivan in the B Singles consolation draw.
Competition in the tournament will continue tomorrow.
