Deacons Open Carpet Capital With Round of 288

ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team opened the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic on Friday with a solid round of even par 288 and are in fourth place in the 15-team field.
Individually for the Deacons, junior Beau Cutts fired an opening round 1-under 71 and is in 15th place.
The Deacons started on the back nine at The Farm Golf Club and made a total of 14 birdies and would go out in 2-under par. They would then come home in 2-over par to post a 288.
"All and all, it was a nice way to start," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "From our four counters today, we had 20 birdies. I think we'll do fairly well this year if we can make that many birdies per round. The guys hit the ball pretty well and we'll see if we can keep it rolling tomorrow."
Cutts, who is playing just his fourth tournament as part of the scoring team, made a pair of birdies on each nine en route to a 1-under 71. That is tied for his lowest round as a Demon Deacon as he also opened the VCU Shootout in 2010 with a 1-under 71.
Senior Charlie Harrison and junior John Varol each carded rounds of even par 72 on Friday. Varol made the turn in 2-under and got to 3-under after a birdie at No. 1 but was 3-over the last three holes. Harrison had equally as much of an up-and-down day as he made six birdies, two bogeys and two bogeys in his round of 72. Both players head into Saturday tied for 22nd.
Junior Thomas Birdsey made two birdies on his first four holes but bogeyed No. 16 and doubled No. 17. The Trophy Club, Texas native then rebounded and played his final 10 holes at even-par to post a 1-over 71.
Freshman Grayson Murray made his Demon Deacon debut on Friday and posted a 7-over 79. He made a total of three birdies in his round.
Georgia took the opening round lead after a 10-under 278. The Bulldogs had three players finish in red figures led by individual leader T. J. Mitchell, who fired a 7-under 65. He leads Alabama's Bobby Wyatt by two shots. Alabama is also in second in the team standings at the Crimson Tide shot a 4-under 284.
The Deacons will be in the second wave off the front nine Saturday morning beginning at 9:45 a.m. Wake is paired with North Florida and Auburn. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
