Deacs Top SMU To Win Payne Stewart Invitational

PINEHURST, N.C. - On a pristine day for golf at the famed Pinehurst No. 2, the Wake Forest men's golf team topped SMU in both the morning and afternoon portions of the Payne Stewart Invitational.
The Deacons carded a round of 295 in the morning stroke play portion to best SMU's score of 307. Then in the afternoon singles matches, Wake Forest won four of the seven matches en route to a 5-2 victory.
Senior Thomas Birdsey and freshman Danny Guise each had solid days for the Deacs. The duo tied for the lowest stroke play rounds with 3-over 73s over the long 7,495-yard, par-70 layout. Guise then won his afternoon singles match over Harry Higgs 3 and 2 while Birdsey made a nice up-and-down out of the greenside bunker on No. 18 to halve his match with Austin Smotherman.
Sophomore Davis Womble shot a 74 in the morning and then won holes 10, 11 and 13 to erase a 2-down deficit en route to a 1-up victory over Bryson Dechambeau. The biggest winner in the afternoon was freshman Clancy Waugh who took down Andrew Buchanan 4 and 3.
Junior Cyrus Stewart and senior Beau Cutts each enjoyed solid morning rounds of 5-over 75. Stewart then capped his day with a solid 2 and 1 victory over Maxime Blandin. Cutts wasn't able to keep his form in the afternoon however as he fell to Alex Higgs 5 and 4.
After starting the day with a tough round of 10-over 80, senior John Varol battled Ryan Burgess in the final match out. With darkness setting in, Varol parred the long uphill 18th to earn a halve of the match.
This was the second year of the Payne Stewart Invitational. The event was founded as a way to honor SMU alum Payne Stewart at the site of his most famous victory. Last year's event wasn't as lucky with the weather and way rained out.
