DURHAM, N.C. - No. 14 Wake Forest fell to No. 7 Duke on Sunday 2-1 in a battle of ranked ACC teams.
After going up 2-0, Wake Forest made it close with under six minutes left in the game but the Blue Devils added a goal with 3:08 to make it a 3-1 final score.
Molly Murphy tallied her second goal of the season with 5:44 left in the game for the Demon Deacons only goal of the day. Duke improves to 10-2 on the season with a 2-0 mark in the ACC. Wake Forest now has an 8-4 record on the season and a 0-3 record in conference.
Valerie Dahmen had eight saves for Wake Forest on the day which ties her career high.
Duke scored with 7:55 left in the first half off a goal from Aileen Johnson who put it over the head of Dahmen off a pass from Emmie La Marchand.
Dahmen made four saves in the first frame. The Blue Devils kept the Demon Deacons from registering a shot in the first half.
Duke took a 2-0 lead after a shot from La Marchand deflected in for a goal. The Deacs were awarded a penalty corner shortly after which Anna Kozniuk launched a shot but was stopped by goalkeeper Lauren Blazing.
Murphy registered a shot off a penalty corner with 12:52 left in the game but the save was made by Blazing. She then added a score with less than six minutes to play but Duke countered with 3:08 to play off a goal from Hannah Barreca off a penalty corner.
Sarah Thornhill got a shot off with less than a minute to play but the Blue Devils closed the game out winning 3-1.
Blazing made three saves for Duke in the game.
Wake Forest returns to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Demon Deacons host No. 3 North Carolina at Kentner Stadium.
