Deacons Open Play at Midwest Blast

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team began play at the Midwest Blast on Friday, taking three singles matches from host Illinois.
Winning in singles for the Demon Deacons were Luisa Fernandez, Kasey Garinder and Karen Forman, while Gardiner and Xue Zhang teamed up to post a doubles win against Missouri.
Fernandez took down Illinois' Alexis Casati 6-3, 6-2, while Gardiner topped the Illini's Jerricka Boone 6-0, 7-5. Forman topped Julia Jamieson 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Gardiner and Zhang scored the Deacons' lone doubles win of the day, beating Elisha Gabb and Rachel Stuhlmann of Missouri 8-7 (2).
Play in the tournament will continue tomorrow with Wake Forest facing Illinois in doubles and Purdue in singles.
