Pitt Edges Wake Forest in Five Sets

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - In a back-and-forth match that featured several tight sets, Pitt downed Wake Forest 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, 11-15) on Friday night in ACC play.

Wake Forest moves to 15-10 on the season with a 4-9 mark in the ACC. Pitt improves to 13-13 with a 5-8 record in conference.

Kristin Grissom had 16 kills for Wake Forest while Jazmen Russell added 15 for the Demon Deacons. Ashlee Rusk had 11 kills with two solo blocks and four block assists. Sophia Dodd paced the team with 34 assists and 11 digs. Megan Miller led the team with 20 digs.

The first set was contested late to a 24-24 tie between the two teams. After an attack error from Pitt that tied the match at 24, the Panthers registered a kill and a block to win the set 26-24.

Wake Forest held a slim lead throughout the second set and won the frame 25-23. After a kill from Pitt narrowed the Deacs' lead to 23-22, Rusk registered two kills in the final three points to give the Demon Deacons the 25-23 win and even the match at 1-1.

In the third set, both teams played to a 18-18 tie until the Panthers scored two points leading to a Wake Forest timeout. With a 24-21 advantage, Russell buried a kill but Pitt registered a kill to win the set 25-22.

Again in the fourth set with the score knotted at 18, Wake Forest went on a three-point run which forced Pitt to take a timeout. Pitt eventually took a 25-24 lead though Anna Carley tallied a kill to tie it up. Russell notched a kill after an attack error from Pitt, Wake Forest won the set 27-25 forcing it to a fifth set.

Pitt took control of the fifth set and stifled the Wake Forest rally, winning 15-11 and taking the match.

Monica Wignot had a team-high 22 kills for Pitt while Maria Genitsaridi had 15.

Wake Forest out-blocked the Panthers 13.0-10.5 in the match.

The Demon Deacons head to College Park, Md. on Sunday to play Maryland at 2 p.m.
