Wake Forest will return from the holidays on Saturday when the Demon Deacons take on the Xavier Musketeers in the fourth Skip Prosser Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Cintas Center. The game will be broadcast nationally on FOX Sports 1 and can also be heard on the Wake Forest IMG Sports Network.
Last Time Out
Wake Forest is coming off a 59-51 over UNCG last Saturday in Winston-Salem. The Deacons got a double-double from Devin Thomas and helf off a late Spartan rally to finish off a perfect home non-conference slate.
Wake Forest held a seven-point lead at halftime, and after UNCG cut the advantage to two points late in the second half, the Deacons responded with an 11-4 run to put the game out of reach.
Thomas scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Demon Deacons, notching his fourth double-double of the season. Tyler Cavanaugh also scored 12 points, six of them coming on back-to-back 3-pointers, in addition to pulling down four rebounds.
Codi Miller-McIntyre joined them in double figures, tallying 11 points, including nine in the final 5:20 of the game.
The Deacons limited the Spartans to 31.7 percent shooting--the second-lowest total for a Wake Forest opponent this season--including a 1-of-15 mark from 3-point range.
Wake Forest Storylines
Saturday's game will honor Skip Prosser who served as the head coach at both Xavier (1994-01) and Wake Forest (2001-07). In six years with the Deacons, Prosser posted a 126-68 record. For his career, he was 291-146 in 14 seasons including six at Xavier and one year at Loyola Maryland.
Wake Forest leads the ACC and ranks eighth nationally in rebounding with 43.6 rebounds per game. The Deacons also feature the ACC's leading rebounder in Devin Thomas, who pulls down 9.8 boards per game.
Codi Miller-McIntyre is one of three players to rank in the top 10 in the ACC in both scoring and assists. Miller-McIntyre is 10th in both scoring (17.5) and assists (4.0), joining Notre Dame's Jerian Grant and UNC's Marcus Paige in the top 10 on both lists.
Series History
The Wake Forest-Xavier series is tied at two wins apiece following the Demon Deacons' 66-59 win in Winston-Salem last season. The Deacons have won two of three games in the annual Skip Prosser Classic.
The series dates back to a 1999 Postseason NIT meeting at the Cincinnati Gardens when Xavier beat Wake Forest 87-76 in the second round.
Next Up...
Wake Forest will open conference play on Sunday, Jan. 5, against in-state rival North Carolina at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
The Deacons are 2-1 all-time in ACC openers against the Tar Heels, including a 92-89 win to start the 2008-09 conference campaign.
Wake Forest will then play back-to-back road games at Virginia (Jan. 8) and at new ACC rival Pitt (Jan. 11).
