WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will search for its first top 30 win of the year when it travels to take on VCU on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
The Demon Deacons hold an 11-3 record through the first half of the year, but will face a tough test in the Rams (12-4), who are coming off of a 5-2 win over No. 44 North Carolina last week.
Following its non-conference finale against VCU, Wake Forest will open ACC play on Friday at No. 4 Duke at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out...
Wake Forest swept a doubleheader against William & Mary and Longwood on March 3, beating the Tribe 5-1 and the Lancers 7-0. Demon Deacon freshmen Morgan Mays and Anthony Delcore made their debut in the top 6 of the singles lineup against Longwood, with Mays winning at No. 1 and Delcore posting a victory at No. 2.
Kreyman Looking for Win No. 100
Senior Danny Kreyman will be shooting for his 100th-career singles win on Tuesday against VCU. Kreyman holds a 99-53 career singles record, including a 24-10 mark this season.
The Long Beach, N.Y. native is trying to become only the fifth player in Wake Forest history to reach the century mark. Cory Parr (114), Todd Paul (107), David Berè (106) and David Loewenthal (101) are the current members of Wake Forest's 100 Club.
Deacons Are the Nation's Most Improved Team
By ranking, Wake Forest is tied with Cornell as the most improved team in the country from last season. The Demon Deacons are currently ranked No. 22 nationally, up 47 spots from their final 2012 rank of No. 69. The Deacons started 2013 ranked No. 66 and have been shooting up the rankings ever since.
Cornell has also improved 47 spots, moving from No. 70 in last year's final rankings to its current ranking of No. 23.
Five Over 20
With at least 12 dual matches still remaining on the 2013 schedule, Wake Forest already boasts five players who have won at least 20 singles matches this season. Adam Lee (25), Danny Kreyman (24), Amogh Prabhakar (23), Sam Bloom (23) and Jon Ho (20) have all reached the 20-win mark.
Last season, only four Demon Deacons reached the 20-win mark all year. The last time that a Wake Forest squad had five players win 20 or more singles matches came in 2007, when Todd Paul, Cory Parr, Jason Morgenstern, Andrew Hamar and Steven Forman accomplished the feat.
Renewing the Rivalry with VCU
Wake Forest will take on VCU Tuesday in a series that has been played annually since 1983. Last season, the Demon Deacons fell 4-2 to the Rams at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
VCU has gotten off to a strong start in 2013, holding a 12-4 record, including a perfect 10-0 mark at home. 15th-ranked Max Wennakoski leads the Rams, who also feature another ranked singles player in No. 99 Alexis Heugas. VCU has two ranked doubles teams: No. 38 Alejandro Argente and Jaime Vazquez Catoira, and No. 39 Heugas and Dylan McCloskey.
