WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 28th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will play its first home ACC match of the season on Friday when it hosts No. 50 Miami at 4 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The Demon Deacons carry a 13-5 (2-1 ACC) record into the weekend and won their last two matches against NC State and Georgia Tech.
Last Time Out
Wake Forest won the doubles point for the first time in conference play and carried the momentum into singles to sweep past Georgia Tech 6-1 in Atlanta last Friday. The Deacons' 70th-ranked duo of David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar won at the No. 2 doubles position, and Jon Ho and Sam Bloom clinched the point with a win at No. 3.
In singles, Ho and Danny Kreyman raced to quick wins, and Bloom clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-6 victory at No. 6. Adam Lee and Prabhakar also posted singles victories for the Demon Deacons, with Prabhakar's coming against Georgia Tech's lone ranked player, No. 84 Juan Spir.
Kreyman Joins the Century Club
Danny Kreyman beat Georgia Tech's Eduardo Segura 6-4, 6-2 to post his 100th career singles victory, becoming only the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark. Kreyman holds an all-time singles record of 100-56 and has played in the top half of the Wake Forest lineup the past two seasons.
The other Wake Forest players to have won 100 singles matches are Cory Parr (114), Todd Paul (107), David Berè (106) and David Loewenthal (101).
Hopkins Keeps Climbing the Doubles Charts
David Hopkins' doubles win against Georgia Tech last weekend was the 87th of his career, putting him only one win away from tying Raul Munoz and current assistant coach Brett Ross for fourth place in school history.
Hopkins has posted a 21-10 doubles record this season, the second-best mark on the team behind his usual partner Amogh Prabhakar, and has gone 10-6 in dual matches.
New Scoreboards to Be Unveiled Friday
Fans attending Friday's match against Miami will be treated to a new feature at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex as electronic point-by-point scoreboards have been installed on each of the six outdoor varsity courts.
The scoreboards will allow fans to keep an eye on the results from all of the courts from almost anywhere in the spectator areas.
In the Rankings
Wake Forest held steady at No. 28 in the ITA Rankings this week. The Demon Deacons have been ranked in the top 30 for the entire month of March, rising as high as No. 22.
In the individual rankings, Amogh Prabhakar came in at No. 60 in singles and Prabhakar and David Hopkins are ranked No. 77 in doubles.
Deacons Among the Nation's Most Improved Teams
Wake Forest No. 28 ranking this week is 41 spots higher than last year's final ranking of No. 69, making the Demon Deacons one of the nation's most improved teams. Only Clemson has gained more spots in the rankings from last season, climbing from No. 64 at the end of last year to No. 21 this week.
The Demon Deacons have already won 13 matches this season, only one shy of last year's win total with at least eight matches still remaining on the schedule. Wake Forest returned its top four players from last season, and added freshmen Jon Ho, Sam Bloom and Morgan Mays to its lineup.
Scouting Miami
Miami enters Friday' match with a 12-6 (1-1 ACC) record. The Hurricanes defeated Georgia Tech 4-3 in their ACC opener before falling to Florida State 5-2 last weekend.
The Canes are ranked No. 50 in the ITA Rankings and their top doubles team of Wilfredo Gonzalez and Omar Aly are ranked No. 66 nationally. Aly and Gonzalez have gone 4-2 together at No. 1 this season. Diego Soto has occupied the No. 1 singles spot for most of the season for Miami, posting a 7-6 record.
