CORAL GABLES, FLA. - Wake Forest was swept in both singles and doubles for just the third time this season, dropping a 7-0 decision on the road against No. 9 Miami at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Hurricanes (13-3, 4-1 ACC) claimed the doubles point, as the Deacs (1-14, 0-5 ACC) were forced to forfeit at No. 3 doubles and Kathryn Talbert and Kasey Gardiner retired at the No. 1 position. Karen Forman and Xue Zhang closed out their match against Melissa Bolivar and Kelsey Laurente, but fell 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, Wake Forest forfeited the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, giving Miami a 3-0 lead. Dropping the bottom two positions forced the remainder of the Deacon lineup to play out of their accustomed spots.
Gardiner grabbed five games off No. 104 Stephanie Wagner at the top singles position, and Andrea Retolaza fought hard in a straight-sets defeat at No. 4 against Deborah Suarez, but the Deacs could not overcome the early hole due to the forfeits.
The Deacons will be back in action next Saturday, Apr. 6, with a trip to Charlottesville, Va., to face No. 27 Virginia (8-6, 3-0 ACC). Wake Forest will be seeking its first road victory against the Cavaliers since Mar. 25, 2007.
