Complete 2012-13 Season In Review
The 2012-13 season saw the start of the Jen Hoover coaching era at Wake Forest and also saw the end of one of the more successful senior classes in school history.
Like most seasons, 2012-13 was full of ups and downs. The year started with a couple of wins and a trip to the beautiful St. Thomas Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. Despite the beautiful scenery, the games didn't turn out as the Deacons would have hoped. But December was a new month and the Deacs would get back on track with five wins in six games to end 2012.
The 2013 portion of the schedule was kicked-off with a rousing win at home over in-state rival NC State. That was followed by an 80-72 victory at No. 18/22 Florida State, marking the first road victory over a ranked team since 1997. But that high was followed with losses in seven of the next eight games.
After a win over Boston College, the Deacs put forth a spirited effort in nearly knocking-off No. 5/4 Duke in Cameron. A week later, Wake went into Charlottesville and defeated Virginia for the first time since 1978. That win was then followed by a pair of losses to close out the regular season.
The ACC Tournament usually brings out the best in Wake Forest and this season was no exception. In the opening round, the Deacs claimed a dominating 86-67 victory over Georgia Tech, a team that had beaten the Deacs twice during the regular season. In the quarterfinals, Wake pushed No. 10 Maryland to the brink before eventually falling in overtime.
While the year didn't end with the success of past seasons, it was still a memorable campaign for the five seniors: Lakevia Boykin, Patrice Johnson, Sandra Garcia, Mykala Walker and Asia Williams. The class won a total of 66 games and tied the school-record for wins against ACC opponents with 29.
2012-13 Notes & Highlights
- The Deacons played four overtime games, which is the most overtime games in a single-season in school history. Wake had played three overtime games in a season five times prior to this season.
- The Deacs were 2-2 in overtime contests this year and are 20-23 all time.
- The win over NC State on Jan. 6, marked back-to-back victories over the Wolfpack for the first time since 1996.
- Wake downed No. 18/20 Florida State on the road on Jan. 10. That marked the first road victory over a ranked team since 1997 and snapped a 53-game losing streak on the road to ranked squads.
- The Deacs won for just the second time ever, and the first since 1978, in Charlottesville with a 73-68 overtime victory on Feb. 25.
- Two times this season, all five Demon Deacon starters scored in double-figures. Those were the first two times that happened in a game since 1995.
- Wake Forest won a game at the ACC Tournament for the fifth-straight season.
- Wake is the only school in the conference that has won a game at the ACC Tournament in each of the last five years.
- Three Demon Deacons recorded their 1,000th career point during the season. Sandra Garcia hit the mark at Illinois, Lakevia Boykin got 1,000 at Virginia Tech and Chelsea Douglas notched her 1,000th point at North Carolina.
- That was the first time in school-history that three players on the same team had 1,000 or more career points.
- Lakevia Boykin started and played every game this season. She set the school-record by playing in 130 games in her career, never missing a game over her four seasons.
- Boykin played 1,158 minutes this season which is more minutes than any other player for a single-season in school history.
- Chelsea Douglas made 72 three-pointers this season, which is the third-most three-pointers made in a single-season in school-history.
- Boykin was close behind Douglas with 62 three-point field goals this season which is tied for the fifth-most.
