WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Brett Armour and Grant Shambley each had three hits, and Wake Forest collected 11 hits as a team, but Miami turned five double plays en route to an 8-3 win over the Demon Deacons on Friday night at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
With the loss, the Demon Deacons fall to 26-24 overall on the season and 7-18 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hurricanes improve to 33-18 overall and 12-13 in conference action.
Miami scored three times in the first, twice in the third and twice in the seventh to build a 7-0 lead before the Deacs could get on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Armour singled to third base with the bases loaded to score Matt Conway and make the game 7-1.
The Hurricanes added a solo home run in the top of the ninth before the Deacs added two in the bottom of the last. Andrew Williams scored Charlie Morgan on a ground out, while Shambley singled home Armour to end the scoring.
Shambley finished the game 3-for-3 and reached base all four times with a walk. Armour recorded a pair of doubles and an RBI by going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Morgan reached base three times by going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Conway, Mark Rhine and Pat Blair all recorded one hit apiece for the Deacs, as Blair added two more walks.
Miami's Chris Diaz earned the win by pitching 7.0 innings and striking out five Deacs. Justin Van Grouw (4-7) suffered the loss in 6.0 innings after giving up 10 hits and seven runs.
Wake Forest had the leadoff man aboard in the second, third and fourth innings, but Miami was able to turn a double play in each of those innings to escape any sort of jam. The Hurricanes also turned double plays in the sixth and eighth innings.
